Long answer - The main NT verse that is referenced is...
Eph. 5:18 - And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
Now this is not an issue of law since the Christian has died to the law with Christ. So what's the point of this verse?
Paul says that we are to be imitators of Christ (Eph. 5:1), and that we are to be careful how we walk (Eph. 5:15). So in order to fulfill those directives, we don't get drunk. If we want to imitate Christ, we don't get drunk.
So if you want to drink wine, fine. When you start to lose self-control, that's it. Different amounts for different people.
Now, you can be a Christian and drink yourself silly - but the Spirit will not work through you. You will be ineffective for Christ, and you may subject yourself to personal temporal judgment. So what's the point of that?
What about drinking with people who are drinking and getting drunk? And is it okay for the Christian to drink with non Christians who are getting drunk?
ReplyDeleteHey Eric,
ReplyDeleteIt depends on your motive. Love should be above all.
Unbelievers will act like unbelievers. If he/she is going for the sole purpose for partying and getting drunk - I would caution against it.
If the person is going through a tough situation and happens to drink to much, then maybe you endure it, and drive them home safely - all with the purpose of building relationships and possibly winning them to Christ.
Whatever the case - prayer should occur beforehand along with a leading of the Holy Spirit.
