Come this fall, a Texas law says all public schools must offer information relating to the Bible in their curriculum.
...
The law actually passed in 2007, but this will be the first school year it is enforced because the bill says, "The provisions of this act pertaining to a school district do not take effect until the 2009-2010 school year."
I don't know what to think about this. It's good that the Bible is included in the curriculum. However, do I want unbelievers in positions of authority teaching my kid the Bible?
Does the law say that the Bible will be taught or that there will be information relating to the Bible? This is a subtle distinction, but an important one. I agree with you. It could be more problematic for a non-believer to teach the Bible (they may ridicule it or undermine the teachings).
ReplyDeleteEric,
ReplyDeleteThe bill is Texas House Bill 1287.
The main focus is to be the effect of the Bible on western civilization. But there seems to be freedom as to how its presented - as long as you don't effectively preach to them.
Oh - and there is a mandatory Bible course that must be taken before one is able to teach the class.
