Steve McNair - A Snapshot of You and Me

As I talked with others about the Steve McNair situation, when I mentioned that there was nothing good about that situation - others would attempt to pull back the reins saying 'but he gave to the community' or 'he did a lot of good in the community'.

In case you don't know, Steve McNair (all pro NFL quarterback) was killed in a murder/suicide by a woman (not his wife) while he slept in an apartment (not his home) at 1:45AM on July 4, 2009.

Now I have no reason to doubt the reports for all of the good deeds that he did. And he obviously was one of the better quarterbacks while he played. However, that does not change the evil he did to his family. Often while watching the reports on TV, the newsmen suggest that we should remember him for his on the field talents - or for the good he did in the community. The viewing public will most often adopt their the views from the newsmen into their own opinions.

The truth is - what he did is evil. However, we want to sweep the evil under the rug. 'Don't be judgmental' is the plea of the day. It's not being judgmental - it's being truthful. And an honest assessment of life on earth will come to the conclusion that we are all a couple of bad decisions from being in the same situation as Steve. Maybe it's not in the area of adultery, but it could be power, riches, or plain selfishness.

The Bible says in Romans 3 that "there is none righteous, not even one" - and "there is none that does good, not even one." It is from that backdrop that I see the Steve McNair situation for what it is - not that it's a pure judgment of him that he is evil - but that he is like all of us, capable of evil deeds at any time - and in need of a Savior to rescue us from ourselves.
